Local Catholics Protest Clinton Veto

ATLANTA--Sixty thousand postcards were mailed by Catholics in the Archdiocese of Atlanta to U.S. senators and representatives from Georgia in the campaign to overturn the veto of the partial-birth abortion ban bill by President Clinton.

This number is gratifying to Peggy Sinanian, director of the archdiocesan pro-life office. "The pastors and their committees were models of cooperation," she said.

A total of 200,000 strips of three postcards, one to each Georgia senator and the third to the individual's representative, were distributed in North Georgia through the pro-life office. After Catholic parishes' requests were filled, the remaining strips were taken by churches of other denominations in North Georgia concerned about the pro-life issue.

"I am grateful for the valuable support of Archbishop (John F.) Donoghue in approving the project so readily and for communicating his concern to his pastors and priests," Sinanian said. The archbishop wrote each parish and mission urging participation in the campaign June 29 and 30. He enclosed a letter which could be read at Masses in place of the homily.

An effort to overturn the presidential veto is expected in late July.
