Archbishop Invites Second Foundation

ATLANTA--During her visit to Atlanta, Archbishop John F. Donoghue asked Mother Teresa to consider making a second foundation in the archdiocese.

The Missionaries of Charity have contemplative nuns, whose lifework is prayer, in addition to active sisters, like those who staff the Gift of Grace hospice in Atlanta. The archbishop said he asked Mother Teresa to send contemplatives to Atlanta.

“She said, ‘You write me and I’ll send you four sisters,’” Archbishop Donoghue said June 13. She had just left Atlanta for Charlotte, N.C.

The archbishop said that one he located an area that would be appropriate in the light of the order’s desire for nearness to the poor, the archdiocese would begin looking for a house for contemplative nuns.

Washington, D.C. is one area where both contemplative and active Missionaries of Charity have houses, he said.
