Kathi Stearns Wins Catholic Press Prize

ATLANTA--Kathi Stearns, associate editor of The Georgia Bulletin, was awarded a third place prize for sports journalism by the Catholic Press Association at their annual meeting held in late May in Los Angeles.

Ms. Stearns’ profile of waterskier Bill Furbish, “Going Beyond The Gold” Paralympic Medalist Knows No Boundaries,” published in August, 1994, was accorded these comments by the judges.

“The story is very honest and doesn’t glorify the subject’s past, instead it highlights how his current athletic campaign goes beyond the physical and affects his spiritual being. We also enjoyed the descriptive, anecdotal lead and the flow of the piece.”

First place honors went to Mike Latona of the Catholic Courier in Rochester, N.Y., while second place was awarded to Dennis Poust of Catholic New York, in New York, N.Y.
