L. 'Johnnie' Johnson Dies At 75

ATLANTA--Lorenzo “Johnnie” Johnson, the father of Zoe Johnson, personnel manager for the Archdiocese of Atlanta, died March 11 in Granville, Ohio, after suffering a series of heart attacks. He was 75.

One of six sons of a Missouri carpenter, he and all his brothers became carpenters or woodworkers. A member of the 2nd Marine Division, he served in the South Pacific during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. He was very active in the 2nd Marine Division following retirement as a sergeant in 1946. He took part in a number of trips back to the beaches of the South Pacific and New Zealand where the Marines made footholds for the Allied forces during the war.

He and his wife, Ina Mae Johnson, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Feb. 1. Although professionally retired as a cabinetmaker and woodworker, he continued to work on family projects, cutting trees he selected and then had milled to provide wood.

He suffered a heart attack March 3 and his family was with him throughout the week before his death. A memorial service was held at his home by the U.S. Marine Corps. He had requested that his body be donated to Ohio State University for medical research.

In addition to his wife and daughter, Zoe, he is survived by another daughter, Katarina Pendrey of Columbus, Ohio, and a foster daughter, Sarita Garvan of Granville.
