Msgr. Terry W. Young Earns Papal Honors

Msgr. Terry W. Young, Secretary for Education for the Archdiocese of Atlanta and pastor of St. Benedict’s, Duluth, will be joining eight fellow priests Dec. 20 as all are invested as monsignors with the rank of prelate of honor.

The honor, given by Pope John Paul II and requested by Archbishop John F. Donoghue, was delayed in the case of Msgr. Young because of a material error made in Washington, D.C. when the original application was submitted for all nine.

Because of that the archbishop had to reapply for the papal honor for Msgr. Young, which arrived from Rome, Italy, late Nov. 15. He will now join in the celebration honoring all the monsignors and Mrs. Sally Grubbs, who will be invested as a Dame of St. Gregory the Great, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of Christ the King.

Msgr. Young is a native of Baltimore, Md. He was ordained May 6, 1972 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. After his ordination he served as assistant principal and then principal of the now closed St. Joseph High School in Atlanta. This three-year tenure was followed by his appointment as principal of St. Pius X High School in 1976. Msgr. Young was St. Pius’ fourth principal and his 15-year tenure was the longest in that post. Msgr. Young was named Secretary for Education after completing an educational sabbatical from 1991-1992.
