Marguerite Oberg Honored By Grey Nuns

Marguerite Oberg was the recipient of the St. Marguerite Award presented by the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart in early February. The award recognizes one whose life, service and goodness reflect the spirit of the Grey Nuns’ foundress, St. Marguerite d’Youville.

Mrs. Oberg was the first female Vincentian in Atlanta’s Saint Vincent de Paul Society and established the society’s Five For Food program. She is a volunteer at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Cancer Home and at St. Joseph’s Hospital of Atlanta. Mrs. Oberg is a parishioner at the Cathedral of Christ the King where she works with senior citizens.

The Grey Nuns established the award after the canonization of their foundress in 1990. St. Marguerite, whom the church named “Mother of Universal Charity,” was the first native-born Canadian to be canonized by the church. She is well known in Canada for her strong reliance on divine providence in responding to the needs of the poor and marginated of 18th century Montreal. Over 4,000 Grey Nuns now carry out ministries throughout the world. The Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart have served in Atlanta since 1937.
