Mission Name Confirmed

Saint Marguerite D'Youville Mission in Lilburn received confirmation Sept. 1 of its patronal name.

The Catholic community had selected the Canadian wife and mother, foundress of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart, as its namesake last December, two years after Marguerite D'Youville was elevated to sainthood. Official acknowledgment was delayed by the death of Archbishop James Lyke, OFM. In one of his first official acts as Atlanta's fifth archbishop, Archbishop John Donoghue confirmed the selection.

"To our knowledge," Father Don Caron said, "it's the first community to have that name." The priest is parochial vicar at St. John Neumann, the Lilburn parish staffing the mission. He said the mission is "growing by leaps and bounds" with more than 300 families now registered. Members are presently preparing a proposal for submission to archdiocesan authorities to purchase property on which to build parish facilities. At the present time the mission uses an office complex at Huff Drive and Highway 29 in Gwinnett County for Sunday Mass and religious education.

Archbishop Donoghue also approved names chosen by the two new Glenmary mission communities, Christ Our King Mission in Greensboro, and Christ Our Savior Mission in Eatonton. The name San Felipe de Jesus Catholic Mission was approved by the archbishop for the Grant Park Hispanic mission.
