Installation Celebration In August

The installation of Archbishop John Francis /Donoghue will take place in two liturgical events at the Cathedral of Christ the King August 18 and 19.

At 7:30 p.m. August 18 during Vespers he will take canonical possession of the archdiocese of Atlanta as the College of Consultors, a body of archdiocesan priests, accepts the letter of his appointment from the Holy See. The archbishop will also give a homily, particularly speaking to the priests of the archdiocese, and Scripture readings and hymns will celebrate Vespers. A light reception will follow in the Hyland Center.

At 1:30 p.m. August 19 there will be a Mass of Installation, in which Archbishop Agostino Cacciavillan, apostolic pronuncio to the United States, will install Archbishop Donoghue as the fifth archbishop of Atlanta. A reception will follow in the Hyland Center.

Father Don Kenny, chancellor, is chairing a committee organizing the events.

Because of limited seating space in the Cathedral, special arrangements are being made for each event, Father Kenny said. At Vespers, each parish and mission has been invited to select two lay members to represent them. In addition, all priests, deacons, and Religious of the archdiocese are invited.

At the Mass of Installation, all priests of the archdiocese are invited, but a representative group of deacons and Religious will be invited. Other details concerning invitations to the Mass, which will also be attended by the archbishop's family, visiting cardinals, bishops and priests, and civic and ecumenical representatives, are still being worked out.
