| Monsignor Edward Dillon, vicar general has announced that the
Tridentine Mass will be celebrated at Holy Spirit Church, Thursday, January 7.
Father Michael Hogan has been assigned to celebrate the Mass.
The celebration of the Mass according to the 1962 edition of the Roman
Missal will be at 6:30 p.m. Holy Spirit is located at 4465 Northside Drive in
Atlanta.
Archbishop James P. Lyke, OFM, granted permission for the celebration under
conditions authorized by Pope John Paul II and set forth by the Congregation
for Divine Worship in 1984. The group petitioning the archdiocese for the
liturgy is asked to meet at 6:10 p.m. at Holy Spirit to discuss the conditions
under which the permission has been granted.
The letter of 1984 announcing authorization of the Tridentine Mass said the
Pope wished to be responsive to the faithful who remain attached to the
so-called Tridentine Rite. The principal condition for permission to celebrate
the Tridentine Mass is that "there must be unequivocal, even public,
evidence that the people petitioning have no ties with those who impugn the
lawfulness and doctrinal soundness of the Roman Missal promulgated in 1970 by
Pope Paul VI."
The rubrics of the revised Roman Missal of 1962 call for the Mass to be said
silently in Latin by the priest and Scripture readings are in Latin.
Initially the Mass will be offered every Thursday.
Monsignor Dillon said the need, location and time for celebrating the
Tridentine Mass will be continually reviewed.
