Father Thomas McAnoy Dies

Father Thomas J. McAnoy, pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary Parish in Detroit, died Nov. 30 after a long illness. He was the brother of Sister Margaret McAnoy, IHM, director of the Cursillo in the archdiocese of Atlanta.

Father McAnoy, 63, suffered a stroke in September and had been hospitalized for two months. He was recently moved to Mercy Bellbrook, a nursing home operated by the Sisters of Mercy in Rochester, Michigan. A diabetic, Father McAnoy had earlier had both legs amputated.

He served as pastor of Our Lady of the Rosary parish in downtown Detroit since 1978. Before his appointment as pastor, Father McAnoy was principal at St. Martin de Porres High School and Bishop Borgess High School in Detroit and Port Huron Catholic High School. Father McAnoy was ordained for the archdiocese of Detroit June 5, 1954.

The funeral Liturgy was celebrated Dec. 3 by Archbishop Adam J. Maida, of Detroit. Seminary classmates concelebrated and Father Robert Morand was homilist. Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton presided at the Scripture service on Dec. 2.

Along with Sister Margaret McAnoy, two other sisters survive: Sister JoAnn McAnoy, IHM, and Jane. Nieces, a nephew and three grandnephews also survive.

Offerings in his memory can be sent to the Father Mack Scholarship Fund for St. Martin de Porres High School, 5930 Woodward Ave., Detroit, MI 48202.
