| Sister Mary Clement Groat, GNSH, first principal at Christ the King
School, died Nov. 17 at the Grey Nuns motherhouse in Yardley, Pa. She was
a Grey Nun for 62 years.
Sister Mary Clement came to Atlanta in 1937 to start Christ the King
elementary and high school. She taught ninth grade and served as local
superior. She served here until 1943.
In 1966 she coordinated the move of the Grey Nuns headquarters from
Melrose Park to Yardley, then served as first administrator and superior of the
new five-building complex. During years of leadership at DYouville
College in Buffalo, N.Y., she headed the campaign for, and construction of, the
library and Madonna Hall, a residence building.
Sister Mary Clement held leadership positions including general counselor,
secretary general, and associate director of development of the congregation.
The Mass of Resurrection was celebrated Nov. 19 in Sacred Heart Chapel at
the motherhouse. Interment was in Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Cheltenham, Pa.
She was born in Buffalo in 1900, the daughter of Catherine Hammond Groat and
George Groat. She attended Holy Angels Academy and DYouville College and
did graduate work at Catholic University and St. Louis University, St. Louis,
Mo.
