Georgia Bulletin Wins Two Awards

The Georgia Bulletin has received a second place award from the Catholic Press Association of the U.S. and Canada for its issue of August 16, 1990, which reported the scandal involving Archbishop Eugene A. Marino, SSJ, Father Michael Woods and Victoria Long.

The association also awarded honorable mention to staff writer Paula Day, for her profile of Father Dan Stack, pastor of St. Bernadette's parish in Cedartown, which appeared in the issue of September 6, 1990.

The newspaper won the second place award in the national competition for best analysis/background/round-up reporting. First place went to the national Catholic Twin Circle for a three-part series on annulment written by Robert J. Hutchinson. The Catholic Sun of the Diocese of Syracuse, NY, took third place for an article on homosexuality and the church by Jan Phillips.

In commenting on The Georgia Bulletin award the judges called the articles "a comprehensive, thorough analysis and record of the scandal ... it would have been an easy story in which to pull punches but the Bulletin took it head-on."

Contributing to the issue were Gretchen Keiser, editor, and staff writers Rita McInerney and Paula Day.

Judges in the best personality profile category called Miss Day's article "a warm look at Father Dan Stack, an active 35-year-old priest with a young outlook but a mature commitment to his small-town parish."

The article prompted a number of laudatory letters from admirers of the young pastor.

Among the prizes received by Miss Keiser in past Catholic Press Association competitions was a national first place award in 1990 for "Mary Jo's Silent Life." This personality profile described the last four months in the life of Mary Jo Fitzgerald, a victim of Lou Gehrig's disease, and how her spiritual response and that of her family inspired many people who came in contact with them.

The Glenmary Challenge, which writes about people and places in the mission areas served by the Glenmary Fathers, also received recognition in the mission magazine categories of the competition. Father John Raush, who works out of the Glenmary Research Center in Atlanta, won a first place award for his article, "Good Friday in a Coal Mine," and Father Bob Bond, editor, received a second place award for a magazine cover in the single color competition.
