Lay-Led Council Includes Clergy, Religious Representation

The members of the newly appointed Archdiocesan Planning and Development Council, in addition to the chairman, Ed de St. Aubin, are:

Gregory Baranco, a parishioner at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Decatur, has been active on the parish development committee. A former member of St. Anthony’s Church in Atlanta, he chaired the finance committee and the archdiocesan appeal drive for that southwest Atlanta church. Mr. Baranco is the owner and operator of car dealerships in Decatur, Gwinnett and Morrow and chairs the First Southern Bank in Lithonia.

Mary Beth Beres, OP attends the Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Atlanta and is a member of the Adrian Dominican community. She served on the archdiocesan Economic Pastoral Implementation Committee and is on leave of absence from Mercer University in Atlanta, where she was an associate professor of management. Sister Beres is a consultant for leadership and organization development with Leadership Systems in Decatur, a consulting firm for organizations committed to collaborative management processes. She taught for 10 years at Temple University in the field of organization behavior.

James Conrads is a parishioner of Christ the King in Atlanta and St. James Mission in Madison. He has served on the cathedral finance committee and is now active in planning a permanent church for the Madison mission. Mr. Conrads is a private entrepreneur who currently manages real estate holdings and investments. His is retained as a consultant for the Mayo Company in Austell.

Roberto Goizueta is a parishioner at Holy Spirit Church in Atlanta and a lecturer in parishes throughout the archdiocese. He is executive vice-president of Aquinas Center of Theology at Emory University and teaches in the college and school of theology as well as the university’s Latin American-Caribbean Studies program. Dr. Goizueta is involved in campus ministry at Emory and works with the archdiocesan Hispanic Apostolate. He is president of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians of the U.S.

Frank Hanna is a parishioner at Holy Spirit Church in Atlanta. Over the 30 years he has lived in the area, he has served on the budget and finance committees of some eight different parishes. Hanna is president of nationwide Credit of Atlanta, Inc.

Phil Humann is a parishioner at Holy Spirit Church in Atlanta and has served for 12 years on the Archdiocesan Finance Council. He is employed by Sun Trust Banks, Inc. in Atlanta as a senior executive vice-president, banking.

Father Al Jowdy is a parochial vicar at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Alpharetta and formerly served at All Saints Church in Dunwoody. He is a member of the Priests’ Personnel Board and chairs the Archdiocesan Council of Priests. Father Jowdy has been involved in presenting weekends for Worldwide Marriage Encounter for the past five years and remains active in the Cursillo movement. The Athens, Ga. native was ordained in 1984.

John Kerrigan is a parishioner at our Lady of Lourdes. Over the past seven years, he has done volunteer work in the area of planning and development for the Marist Brothers of Schools in Poughkeepsie, NY. A former Catholic secondary school teacher, he has worked in youth ministry in both Chicago and California. Mr. Kerrigan is Southeast director for Salomon Brothers investment banking firm.

Ed La House is a deacon at St. Thomas Aquinas Church in Alpharetta where he works with senior citizens and trains parish lectors. He represents St. Thomas on the board of directors for North Fulton Charities and has served as parish council president and chairman of the planning committee for the recently constructed community life building. Mr. La House retired from Aetna Life and Casualty, where he was general manager for the Southeast, after a 41-year career.

Michael J. McNamara, the chief financial officer of the archdiocese of Atlanta, is a certified public accountant who worked for over 25 years for the national accounting firm of Pannell Kerr Forster leaving in 1988 as a partner. He specialized in non-profit organizations and joined the archdiocesan office in 1989. He has also served for over a decade on the U.S. Catholic Conference’s accounting practices committee. He and his wife are members of St. Andrew’s parish, Roswell.

Carroll Sterne is a native Atlantan who grew up in the Cathedral parish and is still a parishioner there. He served a two-year term as parish council president and is currently a member of the building and grounds committee. He has been active on the Archdiocesan Finance Council for several years. Mr. Sterne is vice-chairman of the Southern Bank Group, Inc., a bank holding company.

Dennis Webb is a parishioner at Christ the King Cathedral and a member of the Serra Club. He has been active in fundraising activities for St. Pius X High School and was co-president of the school’s arts council. He has also participated in fundraising for the United Way and Spring Hill College. Mr. Webb is a trial lawyer with Webb, Carlock, Copeland, Semler and Stair, which does civil trial work in the area of insurance defense. He is vice-chairman of the Council.

Mary Wells is a parishioner at St. Paul of the Cross Church in Atlanta, where she has served as parish council president. A former president of the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women, she now serves as Province Director for the National Council of Catholic Women in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Ms. Wells is active in the Serra Club and an archdiocesan delegate to the Black Catholic Congress. The Dublin Ga. native is a mental health-mental retardation supervisor at the Georgia Retardation Center.
