Therapy Continues For Archbishop

Archbishop Thomas Donnellan is in his fifth week of therapy at Emory University Rehabilitation Center where he was admitted May 19, two weeks after suffering a stroke.

He is undergoing an intensive program that includes speech and occupational therapy and that is likely to continue for a sixth week, according to Monsignor John F. McDonough, the vicar general of the archdiocese. The stroke affected the archbishop's right side and speech. After treatment at St. Joseph's Hospital from May 1 to May 18, he was admitted to Emory for its therapy program.

After a visit with the archbishop June 6, Monsignor McDonough said the archbishop "is making progress."

"I was encouraged and pleased with his response to his condition more than I ever have been before," Monsignor McDonough said.

The archbishop, who is 73, has an intensive program and limited visiting hours, the vicar general said.

While prayers continue to be offered for his recovery at parish Masses, the Atlanta Archdiocesan Council of Catholic Women is also gathering a spiritual bouquet of prayers, devotions, rosaries and other sacrifices from people throughout the archdiocese for him.
