Appointment of deans for the six regions of the Archdiocese of
Atlanta has been announced by Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan. These
appointments are effective Jan. 1, 1987 for a term of three years.
The priests in each deanery are asked to submit their
recommendations for the post to the chancellor of the archdiocese. When their
replies are received they are compiled and presented to the archbishop for
final selection.
The deans, or vicar foranes (V.F.), are: Father Thomas J. Carroll,
M.S., V.F., pastor of the Church of St. Ann in Marietta, Northwest Metro
Deanery. Father Carroll has accepted the appointment for a second term.
Father Vincent J. Douglass C.SS.R., pastor of St. Gerards in
Fort Oglethorpe, Northwest Rural Deanery.
Father Edward OConnor, pastor of St. Theresa Catholic Church
in Douglasville, South Metro Deanery.
Father Paul H. Reynolds, pastor of St. John Neumann in Lilburn,
Northeast Metro Deanery.
Father Joseph F. Ware, pastor of St. Peters in LaGrange,
South Rural Deanery.
Father Patrick J. McCormick, pastor of Sacred Heart Church in
Hartwell, Northeast Rural Deanery. Earlier this year, Father McCormick was
appointed dean to fill the vacancy occasioned by the transfer of Father
OConnor from St. Michaels in Gainesville to the new parish in
Douglasville.
The duties of the dean cover a wide area and include presiding
over meetings of priests in his deanery, providing spiritual and material
assistance to seriously ill priests, making recommendations to the archbishops
of the need for new parishes.
The duties also include annual inspection of the parishes within
the deanery, and the responsibility for the spiritual needs of priests within
the deanery. He will also supervise shared efforts in dealing with mutual
problems.

Parishes of the Northwest Rural Deanery are: St. Anthonys
Blue Ridge, and its mission, Good Samaritan, Ellijay; St. Clements,
Calhoun; Our Lady of LaSalette, Canton, and its mission of Our Lady of the
Mountains, Jasper; St. Francis of Assisi, Cartersville; St. Bernadettes,
Cedartown; St. Josephs, Dalton; St. Gerards, Fort Oglethorpe, and
its mission of St. Jude, LaFayette; Our Lady of the Mount, Lookout Mountain,
and St. Marys Rome.
Parishes of the South Metro Deanery are: Most Blessed Sacrament,
