Blairsville Parish Rebuilds After Fire

Parish

By Msgr. Noel Burtenshaw

No one can be happy about a fire. And certainly Father Bob Poandl, Glenmary pastor of St. Francis of Assisi parish in Blairsville, is unhappy that his rectory was burned to the ground in the early hours of April 27. But the kind response of people has brought happiness, says the mountain missionary.

“Everyone has been great,” says Father Bob. “Thirteen families have offered to house us during the new building but we would rather stay here on the property.”

“On the property” means living in a space at the back of the church. With Father Bob is Glenmary candidate Tom Sheehy and a seminarian.

“Tom was in the house when the fire was spotted,” says Father Bob. In fact, when he emerged from the house his bright red hair was black. I think we are blessed that he was not injured. And he is a young man with building experience, so he can now be a help with the rebuilding.”

This week the parish is meeting to discuss the new rectory. “The insurance company has declared that the rectory was a total loss. They have been very cooperative and accepted the bids that we have received. We can get down to carrying out our plans now.”

Father Poandl expressed gratitude to many people throughout the archdiocese who gave assistance immediately after the fire. “We are really grateful for all the support. Many blessings have come our way.”
