Pius Teacher Takes Final Vows As Benedictine Nun

Sister Margaret Mary Liang, O.S.B., member of the religion faculty of St. Pius X High School in Atlanta professed religious vows for life as a Benedictine Sister at a ceremony combining ancient monastic tradition with contemporary theology, April 4 at the Benedictine motherhouse in Cullman, Alabama.

On hand for the ceremony were Sister Margaret Mary’s mother, Mrs. Anna Liang of Miami, and her sister, Sister Lucia Liang, D.C., from Tracy, California. Father Terry Young, principal of St. Pius High School, was a concelebrant of the Eucharist. Other Atlanta participants were Sister Marie Leonard, OS.B., and faculty members of St. Pius.

Sister Margaret Mary Liang was born in Karachi, Pakistan, after her family had already fled mainland China as a result of the Second World War. She completed her college education in Pakistan and came to the United States at the age of 22 to attend graduate school at Mississippi State University.

Upon completion of her studies, she taught the multi-handicapped for two years in Augusta, Georgia. It was during that period that she attended a “Picture Yourself Weekend” sponsored by the Vocation Office of the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Since Sister Liang entered the Benedictine Convent in 1976, she has taught in Huntsville and Birmingham, and is completing her second year on the faculty of the Atlanta diocesan high school.
