What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Print Issue: March 4, 1982

New Parish Named

Parish

One of the most encouraging signs of continuing growth in the Archdiocese is the maturing of older parishes and missions. Such is the case with Saint Francis of Assisi in Blairsville, A mission of Saint Luke's in Dahlonega. The mission has continued a steady development since its establishment in June 1966.

Now, after due consideration with the Archdiocesan Board of Consultors, inquiry of the pastor of Saint Luke's, the dean of the area, and the provincial of the Glenmary Fathers (who have staffed the mission faithfully since its opening), it seems in the best interest of the faithful and the Church at large to move this mission to full parish status. The Board of Consultors has recommended this and I have accepted the recommendation.

Therefore, with the required canonical consultations have been completed, I now decree the establishment of Saint Francis of Assisi Parish in Blairsville.

The boundaries shall be: all of White County, all of Towns County, the Turner's Corner area of Lumpkin County, and all of Union County except the Suches area.

The Mission of Saint Paul the Apostle in Cleveland, GA, formerly also under the care of Saint Luke's, will now be under the pastoral administration of Saint Francis of Assisi.

In addition to this change, the Mother Parish of Saint Luke's in Dahlonega will become responsible for additional areas nearby. The boundaries of Saint Luke's are hereby modified as follows: all of Dawson County, the Suches area of Union county, and all of Lumpkin County except for the area around Turner's Corner.

Saint Luke's Parish will now be responsible for the pastoral care of the young mission area in Dawsonville.

The faithful living within the boundaries herein outlined are encouraged to lend their support and energy to making the Church's presence in this area a continually growing and effective one.

The first pastor of the Parish of Saint Francis of Assisi will be its present administrator, Reverend Robert F. Poandl. Effective March 4, 1982, Reverend John R. Henley will be the new pastor of Saint Luke's. This marks the return of pastoral care for this parish to the archdiocese after many years of outstanding service by the Glenmary Fathers. As we rejoice with these two parishes, we also extend public and heartfelt gratitude to the Glenmary Fathers.

Given at Atlanta Georgia, this 4th Day of March, 1982.

Most Reverend Thomas A. Donnellan, Archbishop of Atlanta.

Reverend Edward J. Dillon, Ecclesiastical Notary.
