New Parishes Open In No. Fulton And W. Cobb

The growth of the Metropolitan Atlanta area is a clearly recognizable fact. Accompanying this development in the general region is the increase in the size of our Catholic Community. This has been particularly true in one area of North Fulton County and another in a section of Western Cobb County.

IN NORTH FULTON COUNTY – the concentration of Catholics now exceeds the capacity of our present parishes. Therefore, having had the benefit of consultation, I hereby decree by this document that a new parish is canonically established to be located in the area near the intersection of Roswell Road, Roberts Road, and the Chattahoochee River. The formal boundaries of the new parish are:

The Southern boundary will begin at the point at which Brantley Road intersects the Chattahoochee Rive, running East on Brantley Road to Roswell Road; North on Roswell Road to Pitts Road; East on Pitts Road to Spalding Drive; East on Spalding Drive to Ball Mill Creek…and thence into the Chattahoochee River. The Northern, Northeastern, and Western boundaries are the Chattahoochee River.

IN WESTERN COBB COUNTY – on September 29, 1977 Transfiguration Parish was established to serve the needs of the faithful in the Kennesaw/Acworth area. Because of continued growth and development to the east of that site, it has become necessary to divide this parish in the Kennesaw area. Therefore, after discussion with the pastors involved, I hereby decree by this document that a new parish is canonically established in Kennesaw with the following boundaries:

Beginning at the intersection of Roberts Road and United States Highway 41: North on 41 to the Bartow County Line; East across the Bartow/Cherokee County Line to Bells Ferry road; South on Bells Ferry Road to I-575…continue South (on I-575) to Roberts Road; West on Roberts Road to United States Highway 41.

The establishment of these two parishes makes it necessary to realign boundaries elsewhere. Accordingly, the boundary between Holy Spirit Parish and Saint Jude’s Parish becomes I-285. The boundary between Holy Spirit and Our Lady of the Assumption becomes Roswell Road. The boundaries of Transfiguration Parish are hereby realigned as follows:

Beginning at Roberts Road and I-575: North along I-575 to Bells Ferry Road…continue North on Bells Ferry Road to the Cherokee County Line; East along the Cherokee County Line to Highway 92; South on Highway 92 to Sandy Plains Road; South on Sandy Plains Road to Holly Springs Road; South on Holly Springs Road to Old Canton Road; South on Old Canton Road to Sewell Mill Road; West on Sewell Mill Road to East Piedmont Road to Piedmont Road; North on Piedmont Road to Allgood Road; West on Allgood Road to Schufflegrit Road; North on Schufflegrit Road to Sandy Plains Road; West on Sandy Plains Road to Canton Highway (Route 5); North on Canton Highway to Kurtz Road; West on Kurtz Road to Bells Ferry Road; North on Bells Ferry Road to Roberts Road; West on Roberts Road to I-575.

The faithful living within the boundaries of these new parishes hereby become members of them. They and their new pastors begin this work with my prayers that the Lord of the harvest will bless their labors abundantly. The effective date of this Decree and of the pastoral assignments connected with it is Wednesday, June 10, 1981.

Given at Atlanta, this 4th day of May 1981.
