What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Print Issue: October 26, 1978

Religious Education Classes Are Diverse

The Apostles asked Jesus, "Lord, teach us to pray." Almost two thousand years have gone by and we, His followers, are still asking, "Lord, teach us to pray."

The priests, sisters and lay teachers of Corpus Christi have accepted the Lord's commissioning to, "Go forth and teach," and have set themselves to the task of the formal religious education for the whole parish -- on all levels.

Classes for elementary and high school students as well as sessions for adults began on Sunday, October 1. Sister Rose Huber is in charge of the Elementary School of Religion and has 73 teachers for over 1,000 students in grades one through seven. Classes are held Sunday thru Thursday with four teachers conducting Special Education Classes on Saturdays.

The High School Religion Classes, under the direction of Sister Dolores Staudt, are held on Sunday and Monday evenings with 26 teachers and 423 students registered for one of the two nights.

The LAMP Committee has a full schedule for the adults planned. Four courses will be offered on Sunday mornings from 9:30 -- 10:30 A.M. in order to accommodate the needs and interests of adults.

Father Frank Giusta is conducting "Catholic Basics," a course designed for anyone interested in learning more about the Catholic faith. Father Giusta and his class use the textbook "Christ Among Us."

"The Christian Adventure" is being presented by John Dearle and guest speakers, with Father John Walsh as the resource person. The question of why some Christians are not realizing the complete life that Christ intends is explored and discussed weekly.

"Philemon's Problem" by Father James Burtchaell is the source book used in "Focus," an in-depth study and group discussion of some central issues in current Catholic theology. This course is taught by Father Noel Neary.

"Update" was one of the most popular adult courses offered last year and is once again led by Al and Norva Cordova and Father Thomas Kenny as the resource person. Using filmstrips and group discussions, the class is given the chance to question, to challenge, and to learn more about themselves and the Church.

Sister Dolores Staudt's course "The Human Adventure" is held on Tuesday evenings from 7:45 - 9:00 P.M. and then repeated on Wednesday mornings from 9:45 - 11 with a nursery provided. Sister Dolores leads her class as they probe into the quality of their lives so that each one can become more fully human and fully alive.

Olga Myers and Sister Rose Hubert present "The Wonder in it All," a methods class for teachers and any interested parents on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 9 and repeated on Friday mornings from 9:45 to 11 with a nursery provided.
