It has been ten years. He came from a point far
North to a point far South in a surprise appointment.
Thomas A. Donnellan, Bronx-born, New York
City-ordained and then Bishop of Ogdensburg, was sent to succeed to the
Archdiocese of Atlanta in 1968. He was appointed by Pope Paul on May 24.
For almost 20 years before going to Ogdensburg,
the archbishop lived in the most famous church in the New World. While serving
on the staff of Cardinal Spellman, his home was St. Patrick's Cathedral on
Fifth Avenue. He also served as Rector of the New York Seminary at Dunwoody.
The Donnellan parents were both emigrants from
Ireland. They had two children: Thomas, who would be the second Archbishop of
Atlanta, and Nancy, who resides in her native New York.
Our magazine shows the many duties of an
archbishop on the local and national scenes. Church and state constantly call
upon the local prelate for his time interest and service. Archbishop Donnellan
has served with many civic administrations along with national Catholic concern
groups.
The archbishop was installed as Atlanta Catholics'
new leader at the Cathedral of Christ on July 16, 1968.
After ten years of Southern involvement, his
Yankee background has almost totally disappeared. Atlanta is well and truly
home after a decade of service, leadership and unparalleled growth.
We pause to remember, to mark the anniversary and
wish him ad multos annos.
