"The continuing growth and development in Gwinnett
County is well known to all in the metropolitan area. This growth has its
effects on the pastoral ministry of the Church as we seek to meet the needs of
increasing numbers of Catholics in this area. To provide better pastoral care
for the growing Catholic population of Gwinnett County, it seems advisable at
this time to establish a new parish in the Snellville area.
"Up to now, Catholics in this area have been
served through the parishes of Saint John Neumann in Lilburn, Corpus Christi in
Stone Mountain, and Saint Lawrence in Lawrenceville.
"Considerable consultation and discussion preceded
this decision. Property for the parish was purchased just east of Snellville in
1977. The archdiocesan Board of Consultors treated the matter and a Committee
of the Board met with the pastors of the adjacent parishes to discuss the
pastoral needs of the area to determine boundaries. The result was to recommend
establishment of a new parish.
"Therefore, having had the benefit of these
consultations and recommendations, I hereby decree that a new parish is, by
this document, canonically established in the Snellville area. The effective
date of this decree and of the pastoral assignments connected with it is April
24, 1978.
"The Boundaries of the Snellville Parish are:
"Going east from Georgia Highway 78 on the DeKalb
County line to Georgia Route 20.
"Going north on Route 20 to Snellville/Grayson
Road (Route 84).
"Going west on Route 84 to Lakeview Road,
continuing west on Pharr Road to Mountain View Road, then to Oak Road,
continuing on Hewett Road to Georgia Highway 78.
"Going south to the DeKalb County line.
"Members of the faithful living within these
boundaries become members of the new parish. They have the challenging
privilege of giving the church an increasingly viable and visible presence in
this area. They and their new pastor begin this work with my prayers that the
Lord of the Harvest bless their labors abundantly."
Given at Atlanta, Georgia, this 24th
day of April, 1978.
Thomas A. Donnellan, Archbishop of Atlanta.
Reverend Vincent M. Mulvin, Ecclesiastical Notary.
