Archbishop Donnellan and 60 priests concelebrated the Eucharistic
Congress Mass at St. Pius Stadium on Friday, May 7. Bishop Ernest L.
Unterkoefler of Charleston gave the homily. Almost 300 voices in youth and
adult choirs from all over the North Metro Deanery brought music to this
evening.
The procession to the field began at 8 p.m. Although skies
threatened, 500 people from all over the Deanery gathered for the occasion. The
scouts formed the color guard and the Knights of Columbus lead the 60
concelebrants. Special stoles marked with the emblem of the 41st international
Eucharistic Congress had been prepared for each priest. The altar was centered
on the 50 yard line of the stadium.
The theme of Liturgy was the theme chosen for the Congress which
will take place in Philadelphia in August, The Eucharist and the Hungers
of the Human Family. Bishop Unterkoefler preached on the
hungers of mankind for God, peace and justice in his homily.
A special booklet was produced by a committee of the Deanery for
the Liturgy. Special commemorative prayer cards were also produced for the
occasion.
It has been fifty years since an International Eucharistic
Congress was held in the U.S. Philadelphia will not only be the Bicentennial
City this year but also the city of the 41st International
Eucharistic Congress.
The liturgy of the North Metro Deanery was a local celebration of
the coming event. |
