St. Joseph's in Athens Marks 101st Anniversary

After a hundred years St. Joseph’s Parish in Athens has finally found the type of celebration it was looking for.

Last year they celebrated the hundredth anniversary of the foundation of the parish. It included a parish dance, an outdoor concelebrated Mass and a family picnic. The two-day event was such a success they decided to do it every year. Thus the parish celebrated its 101st anniversary last week with the same two-day slate of activities.

The PTA handled the details for the dance. The Knights of Columbus organized the cookout, the youth of the parish ran the carnival and the Liturgy Committee planned the Mass.

Music at the Mass was directed by a newly-organized folk group which has more than 35 members.

The event has had great success in bringing the people of the parish together according to Father Michael Woods, pastor. Indications are that the anniversary will be celebrated every year in a similar manner.
