Local CHD Funding

Five local projects received funding from the Campaign for Human Development, representing an amount of $6,394.21. The annual drive in Atlanta netted $19,182.62 with 25 percent remaining in the archdiocese for local use.

Local CHD programs receiving funding were: --Scholarship Funds for Needy Children, submitted by Father Austin McKenna for St. Paul of the Cross Parish summer day camp. The project will enable 30 children selected by West Central EOA to attend the camp on full scholarship. The amount received was $1,890.

--Summer Day Camp project proposed by Father Gerald Peterson of St. Luke’s parish, Dahlonega. The amount of $600 would pay part of the expense of operating a summer day camp in each of the three county areas of Dahlonega, Cleveland Blairsville.

--Dentures and Eye Care for the Needy, submitted by Father Peterson for an amount of $1,000. The amount would extend denture and eye-care programs that had proved successful in Lumpkin country to the other three counties served by St. Luke’s Church and the Glenmary Society, namely: White, Union and Town. The costs were broken down into $525 for 15 eye examinations and glasses; and $475 for five sets of dentures.

--Housing Rehab Project, requested by Sister Janet Valente of the Archdiocesan Office of Urban Affairs. The proposal requested $6,000 but actually received $1,904.21 to help set in motion a rehab project that will address itself to the needy areas of the poor elderly with the specific goal of bringing such homes up to city code. The plan involves organizing a network of volunteers on a rotating basis for a city rehab effort.

--Home Repairs for Indigent Elderly People, submitted by Father Mert McMahon for the Rabun County Advocates for Children and Youth. The $1,000 requested was granted to provide home repairs for indigent elderly people and low-income families with children from Rabun County.

A number of local projects have been forwarded to national level for possible funding but decisions on such funding will not be available for several months, following detailed analysis and study of the proposals submitted.
