Chaplain Stegman Promoted To High Post at Pentagon

A resident of Atlanta’s Fort McPherson, Father Leonard F. Stegman, has been nominated by the president for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General and named to the position of Deputy Chief Chaplain for the U.S. Army.

Chaplain (Colonel) Stegman will assume his new duties in November with assignment at the Pentagon in Washington, DC.

Born in Offerle, Kansas, Chaplain Stegman was ordained a priest of the Franciscan (Capuchin) order in 1944.

He received a direct commission in the U.S. Army Reserve in April 1948 and first entered active duty in 1950. He has served as division chaplain of the 3rd Infantry Division in Germany and as staff chaplain of Headquarters, U.S. Army Communications Zone in Europe. He also has served as an instructor at the U.S. Army Chaplain School at Fort Hamilton, N.Y.

Just prior to coming to Atlanta’s Fort McPherson, he was staff chaplain for the U.S. Army in Vietnam.

While here he has served as chaplain for the Third U.S. Army and chaplain for the U.S. Armed Forces Command. He holds a master’s degree in international affairs from George Washington University in Washington, DC.

His decorations include two Silver Stars, two awards of the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, and the Purple Heart in addition to numerous foreign citations. He wears four campaign stars for service in Korea and two for service in Vietnam.
