Sister Eucharia Named Cancer Home Superior

Sister Eucharia, O.P., has been named the new Mother Superior of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Home in Atlanta. Sister, a native of Rochester, N.Y., succeeds Sister Marie Cordis, O.P., as superior. Sister Cordis’ six-year term expired in June and she will remain at the local cancer home as administrator.

Sister Eucharia, the former Marilyn Morton, is a graduate of Seton Hill College in Greensburgh, Pa., and entered the order of the Servants of Relief for the Incurably Cancerous Poor in Hawthorne, N.Y. The order follows the rule and habits of St. Dominic. At the Hawthorne Motherhouse, Sister Eucharia served as vocation director and in that capacity traveled to the seven homes staffed by the sisters throughout the country.

Sister will be superior of the Atlanta community of 13 sisters at the Washington Street home, which is expected to move into new facilities during August. Sister admitted she dreaded the move to Atlanta because of the anticipated heat, but now adds with a smile, “I simply love it here.”

Sister’s first impression of the city is a glowing account of its beauty and she says, “I just don’t see how anyone could resist it.” She explained she felt the people were extremely genuine and wonderful, adding “they just can’t seem to give enough help. They want to do so much for the people at the home; nothing is too much for them to undertake.”

Sister Eucharia said she was impressed with the hometown atmosphere and warmness experienced since her arrival in Atlanta in October. She expressed her concern that “with Atlanta mushrooming in growth as it is, I would hate to see it lose its sincerity and warmth. Those are genuine attributes of the city.”

Sister’s feast day, the Feast of Corpus Christi, was celebrated last week at the home with a special Benediction and procession of sisters into all the wards, a surprise, Sister explained with a laugh: “Some superior I am. I didn’t know anything was afoot.”
