As of this issue the circulation of the GEORGIA BULLETIN will
increase from 4,500 to 15,000. Every Catholic home in the archdiocese will be
receiving the paper on a regular weekly basis. The new policy of full
coverage was announced by Archbishop Donnellan in the following letter
which was sent to all the priests:
Dear Father:
As you know, Father James Maciejewski is the new editor of our
archdiocesan newspaper, THE GEORGIA BULLETIN. I think you will agree that the
paper has a new look that is most attractive. The comment which we
have received to date have been very favorable.
The problem we experience is that the paper is not getting into
the hands of our people. There are less than 4,000 paid subscriptions. The
volume of advertisement is exceptionally good. Almost $30,000 per year is
realized from paid advertisement. If, therefore, we could increase our
subscriptions, we could continue to produce a good paper.
To study the problem of THE GEORGIA BULLETIN and to propose a
solution, I appointed a committee of our priests. The committee consisted of:
Monsignor John McDonough, Monsignor Donald Kiernan, Father Thomas
Kenny, and Father Patrick McCormick.
Along with Fathers Burtenshaw and Hardy, they made the following
new proposals:
- Each parish would forward a complete parish list to THE GEORGIA
BULLETIN office. This would have to be kept updated.
- The paper would be forwarded to every name on the list, except
to those who specifically state that they do not wish to receive it. Those who
do wish to receive it but for some reason have not paid their subscription,
would continue to receive the paper.
- Each parish would be billed annually, based on the number of
families receiving the paper in the parish. The subscription rate will remain
$5 per year. Payment would be made for three quarters of the number of families
in the parish. For example, a parish with 1,000 families would pay $3,750 per
year. This would, therefore, take care of those families delinquent in their
payment to the parish.
- Revenue from advertisement and the archdiocesan budget would
make up the total annual allotment for the paper.
The committee recommended that the matter be brought to the
attention of the Senate of Priests. In turn, the Senate recommended that you be
advised of the new plan. I welcome your comments.
If THE GEORGIA BULLETIN is to survive, it can do so only on a
system of full coverage. I feel that this new plan will allow us to place our
newspaper in the hands of all our people each week, and I am confident that,
with your help, they will respond favorably to it.
Sincerely your in Christ,
Most Reverend Thomas A. Donnellan
