Smith To Head Finance Council

Atlanta Attorney Alex W. Smith has been appointed chairman of the Archdiocesan Finance Council by Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan for 1972. The appointment is effective January 1, 1972. He has been a member of the Council since its inception in 1966.

Mr. Smith, a member of the Cathedral of Christ the King Parish, is a graduate of Marist. He attended Holy Cross College in Worcester, Mass., and the University of Georgia where he graduated in 1948. That same year, he was admitted to the bar.

He is a partner in the law firm of Smith, Cohen, Ringel, Kohler, Martin and Lowe and a member of the State Highway Board. He is also a director of the National Bank of Georgia.

For many years, Mr. Smith has served in various advisory capacities in the archdiocese. He is a director of the Holy Family Hospital and secretary-director of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Free Cancer home.

He is married to the former Betty Haverty and they have seven children.

Four other members have been added to the Archdiocesan Finance Council by Archbishop Donnellan. They are: Carl F. Mahoney, Dr. Harding Young, Jack Spalding and Joseph Zwicknagel. Mr. Mahoney is senior vice-president, secretary and treasurer of the Robinson-Humphrey Company, Inc. He is a member of Saint Jude's Parish and the father of three children.

Mr. Spalding is editor of The Atlanta Journal, a member of Saint Jude's Parish and the father of five children.

Dr. Young is a professor of business management at Georgia State University. He is married with four children and is a member of Saint Paul of the Cross Parish.

Mr. Zwicknagel is retired from the financial department of the General Motors Corp. He is presently Director of Operations of the Jo-Mar Accounting Service. He is married and has two sons.
