What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Print Issue: November 11, 1971

If You Can Dream It You Can Do It

(This space each week will reflect follow-up progress on the Archdiocesan Pastoral Council's "Operation Eye Opener." It will highlight progress in various parishes as the programs take shape and are implemented.)

… The dream continues to become …

Corpus Christi's CFM group has begun to explore ways to get their parish involved in "Operation Eye-Opener." At a pot-luck supper last Saturday evening, Father Hardy and Sister Janet discussed the archdiocesan program with about twenty couples and offered any further assistance to enable this newly-established parish to determine a need area and to become involved. The group responded with much interest and concern and will be formulating parish plans soon.

St. Paul Of The Cross

Father Austin McKenna has reported that very concrete plans are underway for a day care center in St. Paul's parish. Under the leadership of Mrs. Agnes Boone, four meetings have been held, a board of directors established and plans for a parish fish fry on November 23rd to aid in the funding, are now being fleshed out.

Work is also being done of a parish adaptation of the Family-to-Family program. Questionnaires seeking further parish involvement in the Eye Opener program yielded 35 interested responses.

St. Philip Benizi

Within the past two weeks, the following has taken place regarding "Operation Eye Opener:"

(1) Members of the Parish Council have decided to conduct a parish appeal -- a "Get Involved Sunday" for new membership and committee involvement in the archdiocesan program. The pulpit appeal will be conducted in two weeks by parish council members themselves.

(2) A small group of women have volunteered to help in the welfare office of Clayton County in Jonesboro to teach the use of food stamps and proper buying, and to assist in a large-scale home economics program

(3) A number 236 Housing project is nearing completion next to St. Philip's and this appears to afford several opportunities for involvement. Possibilities are being explored.

Christ The King

At a parish council meeting Wednesday, November 3rd, parish involvement in the domestic workers and day care areas was chosen. An ad-hoc housing committee will soon begin intense educational preparation as a first step to further parish work in the housing area.

The day care committee has had four meetings to begin to operate a plan for a racially integrated, ecumenically collaborative child development-enrichment program. The plan involves three weekly morning sessions with three- and four-year-olds from neighboring Spanish communities and other needy areas. Keep your eye on this column for more details on this quickly developing project. Christ the King is working with neighboring churches in this effort.

St. Jude

At a parish council meeting November 1st, a parish agenda was set. Groups in all five program areas will be meeting and exploring possibilities between now and their December meeting when definite areas of involvement will be determined. Parish response to the skill bank idea unearthed 230 people interested in giving of their time and talent. Under the direction of Mr. Pat Cooney, this information is being collated and a parish operations-center is being set up. Utilization of some of the kinds of talent offered the possibility of a medical outpatient clinic in the Roswell area, establishment of a housing center and adult education classes for people in low-income developments.

There was a suggestion to organize a youth skill bank from the YCS, scouts and junior-high groups. The parish will continue to support the day care center in Roswell and a school effort will be made to get the children involved at the center.

Pius X High School

A senior class forum was held last Wednesday to present varied ways the students could get into social action projects. Father Hardy and Sister Janet explained the archdiocesan program, stressing the need for them to get involved in their parishes supporting and initiating projects begun there. Several other avenues for involvement were considered and a follow-up meeting will offer students a chance to choose what interests them.
