132 Attend Archdiocesan Annual Retreat-Camporee

The annual Retreat-Camporee sponsored by the Catholic Committee on Scouting of the Archdiocese of Atlanta was held April 23-25 at the Atlanta Area's Bert Adams Scout Reservation just south of Covington.

Bob Woodall of St. Philips Parish, Jonesboro, Ga., was the general chairman of the Retreat-Camporee. This year, in spite of threatening weather, 107 Boy Scouts and 25 adult Scouters attended the three-day affair.

For the first time, all Scouts of the Atlanta area were invited regardless of religious affiliation. Of the 107 Scouts who attended, 47 were Catholic and 60 were non-Catholic. Emphasis of the Retreat-Camporee was placed on all Scouts obtaining their Scout religious medal whether it be the "For God and Country" medal awarded to protestant Scouts, or the "Ad Altare Dei" medal awarded to Catholic Scouts.

The Reverend Jerry McCurdy, assistant pastor, Oak Grove Methodist Church, counseled the non-Catholic Scouts while Father Jack Dougherty, Chaplain, 3rd Army, Jamie Vendrell Religious Emblem Chairman, and Father John Kieran, Archdiocesan Scout Chaplain counseled on the "Ad Altare Dei" training program. In the afternoon, Gene Donahue, Henry Neumann, and Jerry Deckbar of the Serra Club held an interesting session on vocations for the boys.

The weekend was laced with good clean fun and games and sometimes not so clean Scout cooking. Bob Woodall, with the help of the other committee members, conducted a highly successful Retreat-Camporee closed by a dramatic campfire ceremony Saturday night and a Eucharistic celebration in the outdoor chapel Sunday morning.

On Saturday afternoon, Jim Kammerer, chairman of the Archdiocese Catholic Committee on Scouting, held the regular quarterly meeting of that group to discuss current programs. A special meeting to be held at Scout Headquarters on Luckie Street on June 2 at 7:30 p.m. to elect officers for the coming year and to decide on the next year's calendar of events. A representative of each Catholic-sponsored Boy Scout troop is encouraged to attend.
