Adult parishioners of all parishes in metropolitan
Atlanta will be given a chance to assist the Archdiocesan Board of Education in
making a recommendation to the archbishop concerning the possible re-location
of St. Joseph's High School.
The Courtland Street school will open at its
present location next September, but it is likely to be relocated within the
next year or two. A recent meeting at the high school indicated that there was
a difference of opinion regarding any change.
Parishioners, especially those in the southwestern
part of the city, indicated that they would prefer that the high school be
moved in that direction, rather than to remain at a downtown location.
At the March 8 meeting, a proposal was presented
by John Randolph, chairman of the Blessed Sacrament Board of Education, for the
re-location of the school to that parish's land.
At the meeting, Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan
promised parents that no decision would be made immediately, and all proposals
would be evaluated by the Archdiocesan Board of Education. He did say, however,
that time was a factor in the purchase of any new downtown property.
At its March 9 meeting, the Archdiocesan Board of
Education set up a subcommittee chairmaned by Dr. Herbert Girardeau to
reconsider the proposed relocation and to advise the archbishop by the end of
March.
It is this committee that has drawn up a
questionnaire that will be distributed to all metropolitan-area parishes
Sunday, March 28.
Although the majority of students attending the
downtown high school come from parishes in the southern part of the city,
nevertheless, some students come from almost all of the greater Atlanta
parishes, and all of these parishes are assessed for the high school's subsidy.
It was with this in mind that the board decided to
send the questionnaire to all metropolitan parishes.
