Atlantan Is On Catholic-Methodist Group

Dr. Mack B. Stokes, associate dean and Professor of Theology of the Candler School of Theology at Emory University, has been named to a four-member committee to bring together results of discussions between Methodism and the Roman Catholic Church.

The committee will be reviewing and summarizing the pioneering three-year conversations between the Methodists and Roman Catholics.

Dr. Stokes and Dr. Harold Roberts of Great Britain will represent the World Methodist Council. Canon William Purdy of the Secretariat on Christian Unity of the Roman Catholic Church will be one of two representatives of the Catholic Church at the discussions in Rome Dec. 13-18, 1970.

The Joint Commission of the Roman Catholic Church and the World Methodist Council was established to explore and discuss the major points of agreement and disagreement between the Roman Catholic Church and the various bodies of Methodism throughout the world.

The conversations began with a meeting at Aria, near Rome, in 1967. Small groups were convened to carry forward the discussions until the second meeting of the Joint Commission in London in the summer of 1968.

Again, following interim group discussions, the third meeting of the Joint Commission took place at Malta, in September, 1969.

At the fourth meeting at Lake Junaluska, N.C., in August, 1970, it was decided the time had come to bring together the results of the discussions including points of agreement and unity as well as differences.

The four-member committee is charged with the responsibility of summarizing the discussion of the past three years and clarifying areas of agreement and disagreement. The results of their efforts will be used to guide in the deliberations in the future and in other ways to be identified by the World Methodist Council and by the Roman Catholic Church.
