Archbishop's Award To Be Ecumenical

Ecumenism will be the order of the day when Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan receives the National Conference of Christians and Jews “Clergyman of the Year” award Oct. 13.

The award named after Herman L. Turner, one of the founding members of the Atlanta NCCJ Chapter, will be presented by Dr. J. McDowell Richards, president of Columbia Presbyterian Seminary in Decatur.

The archbishop will also receive the Harry Dwoskin Award which, in cooperation with the Israeli government, provides a 10-day tour of the Holy Land. This will be presented by Rev. and Mrs. Samuel Williams, last year’s recipients. Rev. Williams is pastor of Friendship Baptist Church.

The main speaker will be Terence Cardinal Cooke of New York. Dan E. Sweat, Jr., Atlanta’s chief administrative officer, will bring greetings from the mayor’s office, Rabbi Jacob Rothschild will deliver the invocation, the Rev. Homer Goumenis of the Greek Orthodox Church of the Annunciation will say the benediction.

The Rev. Homer C. McEwen, pastor of the First Congregational Church, is dinner committee chairman and will serve as master of ceremonies.

Dr. A. Wilson Cheek, executive director of NCCJ’s Georgia region, said that the Archbishop’s efforts on behalf of improving relations between persons and groups with varying religious, racial and economic backgrounds “have done much toward improving the quality of life in Atlanta.”
