Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan has been chosen as the
Clergyman of the Year by the National Conference of Christians and
Jews.
He will be honored at a testimonial dinner October 13, at the
Sheraton-Baltimore Hotel.
The testimonials and awards made on that occasion are in
recognition of his distinguished service in the field of religion, furthering
the ecumenical spirit among all religious groups and courageous moral
leadership for social justice for all of our citizens.
Speaker for the event will be His Eminence, Terence Cardinal Cook
of New York City.
Archbishop Donnellan will receive the Herman L. Turner Award for
1970. This award is presented by the National Conference of Christians and Jews
in honor of one of its founding members of the Atlanta Chapter.
He will also be presented the Harry Dwoskin Award which provides a
ten-day trip to the Holy Land.
It is expected that hundreds of persons from all religious faith
in the area will attend. It will be an opportunity to express respect and
appreciation for this great religious leader who in a few short years has
helped so much to improve interreligious and interracial relations in Atlanta,
said Dr. A. Wilson Cheek, executive director of the National Conference of
Christians and Jews, Georgia Region.
He added, The National Conference of Christians and Jews
honors each year a clergyman who has applied the spiritual and ethical values
of our Judaeo-Christian tradition to the problems of contemporary society,
holding high our ideal of one nation under God, indivisible with liberty
and justice for all.
