What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Print Issue: July 2, 1970

Sr. Alwes Assigned As Assistant Secty.

Sister John Frances Alwes has been assigned to the Department of Catholic Social Services as the assistant secretary.

Sister received her AB degree from Avila College, Kansas City, MO, and her masters in social work degree from Fordham University, N.Y.

Sister John Frances has taught all levels of elementary education for some 15 years and has been principal for three years. Her order assigned her as administrator of Saint Joseph Boys Home, Washington, GA, during its last two years of operation before moving to Atlanta.

In 1967 with the opening of the Village of Saint Joseph, Sister administered the new facilities and initiated the residential treatment program for the emotionally disturbed and dependent child presently in progress.

Sister assumed her new position July 1.

This is a rather unique position since Sister will be the first nun to hold the position of assistant secretary of an archdiocesan department of Catholic social services anywhere. A part of Sister’s shared responsibilities includes the administrative and its divisions: Catholic Family Services, Village of Saint Joseph, Resettlement Division, Agency for Exceptional Children and the Office of Urban Affairs.
