Book Shop Seeks Parish Location

The Notre Dame Book Shop, forced to move by July 1 from its Ivy Street location because of new construction, is seeking a temporary location in one of the parishes.

Meanwhile, a committee of clergy and laity will seek a permanent location for the facility.

A moving sale will be held during the middle of June and volunteers are being sought to help with the moving and redecorating. Call 525-1388.

The first open meeting sponsored by the Notre Dame Book Shop to give all interested persons a chance to voice their suggestions and opinions about the future of the shop, produced some interesting ideas.

The one most discussed came from Father Tony Morris, head of the Office of Religious Education. Father Morris said that he considers the Notre Dame Book Shop indispensable in the field of education, and that he would like to see space given to the shop in the new Chancery Building on West Peachtree St.

Sisters Sharon Holland and Mary Ann Flanagan of Holy Cross Religious Education program, and Sister Elizabeth Lee Heisler of St. Thomas the Apostle in Smyrna agreed with Father Morris about the essential nature of the shop’s mission, and urged that the shop relocate in a central location where it would be easy for people to drop by and browse.

It was announced at the second meeting last week that there is a possibility of two parishes negotiating with the Book Shop regarding space on their property. Sister Rose Mary Cauley of Christ The King School of Religion said that it would be good if the shop could have a branch location in a parish as well as a central shop.

Mrs. Jack Tracey made a plea for a refusal to settle for a “cubby hole” and argued the group to think big. Father Jim Scherer also made a strong plea for the shop to go “first rate”.
