Sanders Set For Seniors

Former Gov. Carl E. Sanders will deliver the commencement address at this year’s archdiocesan high school graduation.

The exercises are to be held at the Fox Theater Saturday at 10 a.m.

Sanders served as Georgia’s chief executive from 1963 to 1967. He is presently practicing law in Augusta and Atlanta with a private firm.

Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan will preside at the ceremonies, which will see 292 graduates from St. Pius X and St. Joseph high schools received their diplomas. This is the highest total of graduates to date.

Father John Cotter, St. Pius principal, will call out the names of 179 seniors who will receive diplomas from that school.

Father Paul Kelley, St. Joseph’s principal, will read the names of his 113 graduates.

Father Daniel J. O’Connor, secretary for education for the archdiocese, will make the opening remarks at the ceremony and will introduce Sanders.

Each year during the exercises, the archbishop’s award for scholastic excellence is presented. Samuel McQuaid, chairman of the Archdiocesan Board of Education, will make known the names of this year’s winners. The award goes to the boy and girl from each high school who has achieved the highest scholastic average.
