Archbishop Ordains 2 For Atlanta Work

Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan will ordain two priests for the Atlanta Archdiocese at noon Saturday at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Rochester, N.Y.

Priests of the Atlanta archdiocese who will be attending the ceremony are Father Jerry E. Hardy, director of vocations who will serve as master of ceremonies, and Fathers Raymond F. Horan, Henry C. Gracz and James F. Scherer.

The two are James H. Sexstone Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. James H. Sexstone, Sr., of Pittsford, N.Y., and John August Lawrence, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert E. Lawrence of Rochester, N.Y.

Sexstone will say a concelebrated Mass of Thanksgiving Sunday in his home parish of St. Louis Church and Father Scherer will preach the homily.

The priest-to-be has two younger sisters and two younger brothers. He attended St. Bernard’s Seminary and College and transferred to the Archdiocese of Atlanta from the Diocese of Rochester in 1966, and worked at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish here in August, 1967. Bishop Joseph L. Bernardin ordained him to the diaconte in 1968 at the Cathedral and he worked the summer as a deacon at IHM.

Lawrence attended St. Andrew’s and St. Bernard’s seminaries in Rochester and graduated with a bachelor of divinity degree from St. John Vianney Seminary in East Aurora, N.Y.

After adoption by the late Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan, he worked at the Church of Our Lady in Carrollton and as deacon at St. Jude’s Church in Sandy Springs.

Sunday, he will concelebrate a Mass at St. Thomas the Apostle with Rt. Rev. Richard K. Burns, pastor; his uncle, the Very Rev. August B. Ficheter of Jasper, Ind., and Revs. James A. Schwartz of Rochester, Ray Horan of St. Thomas More in Decatur, and Robert Kinast of Blessed Sacrament in Atlanta. Assisting as commentator will be Rev. Paul R. Bossi, dean of the seminary’s deacon class.
