Murphy Named New Editor, Paper To Use New Format

Archbishop Thomas A. Donnellan and the Archdiocesan Board of Communications announce the appointment of Mr. Harry H. Murphy Jr. as editor the GEORGIA BULLETIN succeeding Father Donald Kiernan who has served as acting editor since last October, when Chris Eckl left the archdiocesan weekly to enter academic work.

At the same time the Archdiocesan Board of Communications announces the entering of a joint venture with the Diocese of Savannah, and the Diocese of Charleston in publishing a weekly newspaper, with a different format, for all three dioceses.

A native of Atlanta, Harry Murphy attended Immaculate Conception School and Marist College before enlisting in the Navy. Following military service the new editor entered the University of Georgia, where he graduated with a journalism degree in 1958.

Mr. Murphy worked on newspapers in Gainesville, Georgia, Savannah, Georgia, and Charlotte, N.C. Presently he is on general assignment as a reporter with the ATLANTA JOURNAL.

Married to the former Barbara Etheredge, the Murphy’s have six children and reside in Saints Peter and Paul Parish and live in Decatur.

Mr. Murphy is a member of Sigma Delta Chi, national journalistic society and the Atlanta Press Club.

With the appointment of Mr. Murphy as editor, Father Kiernan ends thirteen years association with the archdiocesan newspaper which has carried his weekly column, “Georgia Pines” which has appeared for the past eleven years.

Father Kiernan will devote full time to his present assignment as pastor of Atlanta’s, Saint Jude’s Church.
