Confirmation For Exceptional Persons To Be Held In March

Our Lady’s Association for Exceptional Children has scheduled a second confirmation for exceptional persons March 1 at 7 p.m. at Sacred Heart Church.

“This time last year, the association requested the first Confirmation for exceptional persons. We expected eight to 10 candidates, but 30 were confirmed,” said Father Richard A. Kieran.

“There are many more unconfirmed exceptional persons in the archdiocese and every one of them can grow in the life of God through this sacrament.

“It is desirable, whenever possible, that an exceptional person be confirmed in his own parish. This special confirmation is for those who find it difficult or impossible to be confirmed with a regular parish group, due to any kind of exceptionality. The ceremony will be adapted to their needs,” Father Kieran said.

The following are general norms regarding the eligibility of exceptional persons for confirmation. If there is any doubt an application should be submitted, for each case will be considered on its own merits. All candidates must have been baptized.

An exceptional person, who will never have sufficient awareness to receive Holy Communion can and should be confirmed immediately. No instruction is required.

An exceptional person with sufficient awareness to receive Holy Communion, normally should receive before being confirmed. It should be possible to give some slight understanding of confirmation to such a person.

All exceptional persons ten years of age and older should be confirmed immediately.

“While an effort should be made to prepare the candidates, with whatever instruction is possible, care must be taken not to withhold a child by demanding too much in this regard. In this matter parents and teachers are the best judges. We must often be satisfied with minimal knowledge,” the priest said.

For each candidate a Certificate of Baptism and a completed application form (available from Father Kieran) should be forwarded to: Father Richard A. Kieran, 3292 David Road, Chamblee, Ga. 30005, no later than Feb. 17, 1968. Further information will be mailed on receipt of an application or can be obtained by calling 938-9201.

The confirmation will be followed by a party for all the exceptional persons of the archdiocese, their parents or guardians, their parents or guardians, their friends and relatives. “You are invited. Please, plan to attend the confirmation and share in the fun afterwards. We hope that many of last year’s confirmation group will be present,” the priest said.
