Correspondence Course Needed In Rural Areas

The Archdiocesan Board of Lay Organizations said a CCD correspondence course is needed for instructors in rural parishes.

As its meeting Friday night, the board voted to ask the Archdiocesan Board of Education to study the matter and see what services could be provided.

Chairman John Cawley and other members of the board discussed the need for more involvement in parish life. Father Thomas Rosetko, S.M., priest secretary, said, “The experience of any organization shows that a few do most of the work. We talk about quantity, but we also need to improve quality.”

William Steve asked, “Isn’t there something we can do to increase active participation for ten percent to 15 or 20 percent?”

Cawley said he would like to hear from persons not active in any lay organization. “I wish they would take the time to tell us why they are not active,” he said. Letters may be sent to the Board of Lay Organizations, 1406 Hearst Dr., NW, Atlanta, 30319.

Members pointed out that a survey of parishes showed that a greater percent of people are more active in a smaller parish rather than a large one, and they feel more like a family.

The survey also showed that parishioners wanted at least one trained catechist in each parish and also cited the need for better coordination among parish organizations.
