Hoffman Chaplain At Emory

Father William Hoffman has been appointed full-time Newman chaplain at Emory University with residence on campus.

“The assignment of Father Hoffman to this vital university post can be the beginning of a new era for the Newman movement in the archdiocese,” Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan said.

“He is the first archdiocesan priest to be so assigned and now our priests will be working side by side with religious order priests. Excellent work—and in some cases heroic work—has been carried out by the Franciscan fathers of the New York province aided by Benedictines and Passionists.”

The archbishop said the Catholic enrollment at Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State, Atlanta University, Agnes Scott, Oglethorpe and at the University of Georgia has grown to about 3,000 students.

‘There is no area of apostolic work more urgent because leaders of the Church and community of tomorrow are being formed. Father Hoffman is exceptionally qualified for this post. His academic work was done in Rome and at the University of Georgia,” the archbishop said.

Before his new appointment, Father Hoffman was principal of Drexel Catholic High School which was closed in June and was priest-in-residence at St. Anthony’s.
