Eight Georgia Priests Mark Silver Jubilee

A unique occasion will unite eight priest jubilarians at the altar of the Cathedral of Christ the King today at 5:00 p.m. A concelebrated Mass will mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of priestly ordination for priests representing the Archdiocese of Atlanta, the Diocese of Savannah and the military chaplaincy.

Principal celebrant of the Jubilee Mass will be Archbishop Paul J. Hallinan. Celebrating with him will be: Right Rev. John D. Toomey, Very Rev. Vincent P. Brennan, S.M., Very Rev. John J. O’Shea, Rev. Thomas Gilroy, S.M., Rev. Theophilus McNulty, O.F.M., Rev. Edward J. Flatley (Chaplain Major), Rev. Timothy Flaherty, O.S.B., and Rev. John F. McDonough.

Bishop Thomas J. McDonough of Savannah will preach the sermon at the Jubilee Mass. Bishop Joseph L. Bernardin, auxiliary bishop of Atlanta, will be present in the sanctuary. Officers of the Mass will be: Rev. John D. Stapleton, deacon; Rev. Charles Brogley, S.M., sub-deacon; Rev. Noel F. Burtenshaw, master of ceremonies; Rev. Arthur Murray, O.F.M., and Rev. Michael J. Manning, chaplains to Bishop Bernardin; Very Rev. Thomas J. Roshetko, S.M. and Rev. Michael J. McKeever, chaplains to Bishop McDonough; Mr. Keith Langworthy, organist and Mr. Hamilton Smith, director of music.

Right Reverend John D. Tooley, S.T.L., was born in Augusta, Georgia, in 1914. He attended St. Charles Preparatory Seminary, Catonsville, Maryland, and the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C. He was ordained in 1941, and served as assistant pastor at the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, Savannah, 1941-42. He was pastor at Sacred Heart, Milledgeville, 1942-52, and has served as pastor at St. James Church, Savannah, since 1952.

Rev. John F. McDonough, presently rector of the Cathedral of Christ the King, was born July 28, 1914 in Boston, Massachusetts. He attended Boston College and St. John’s Seminary, Brigthon, Mass. Ordained on May 1, 1941 he served in the Archdiocese of Boston and as a chaplain in the U.S. Army before coming to Georgia. Since then, he has served as assistant pastor of the Cathedral of Christ the King; pastor of St. Peter’s Church, LaGrange; and St. Mary’s, Rome; presently, rector of the Cathedral of Christ the King. Effective May 14, Father McDonough will become pastor of the parish of Holy Spirit.

Rev. John J. O’Shea was born in Augusta, Georgia, on December 20, 1909. He received his seminary training at St. Mary’s in Baltimore, Md. and was ordained to the priesthood on June 7, 1941. Since ordination he has served as assistant pastor at Blessed Sacrament, Savannah, St. Joseph’s, Athens, St. Anthony’s, Atlanta. He has been pastor of St. Augustine’s, Thomasville’ and was chaplain at federal penitentiary in Atlanta. Presently he is the pastor of St. John the Evangelist Parish, Hapeville.

Very Rev. Vincent P. Brennan, S.M., is a native of Quincy, Mass. In the Society of Mary he spent his novitiate year in Staten Island, N.Y. and his major seminary years at the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. He was ordained on June 8, 1941 by Bishop Michael J. Keyes, S.M., formerly Bishop of Savannah. Father Brennan has served in Atlanta since 1943, being named principal of Marist School in 1953. In 1961 he was appointed superior of the Marist community and president of the Marist School, positions he still occupies.

Rev. Thomas Gilroy, S.M., was born in Enniskillen, County Germanagh, Ireland on April 19, 1917. He was educated by the Marist Fathers in Dundalk, Ireland. He spent his novitiate and two years of philosophy in Milltown, Dublin. His theology studies were in Paignton, England. After his ordination in September 1941, Father Gilroy taught in Blackburn, Lancashire, England until he came to the American Province of the Society of Mary in 1958. In the United States, he has spent three years at the Marist Junior Seminary in Penndel, Penn., and the remainder at Marist School, Atlanta.

Rev. Theolphilus McNulty, O.F.M., was born in St. Petersburg, Florida, and educated in the public schools there. He was ordained a priest of the Franciscan Order in June 1941 at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington, D.C. He pursued graduate work in science at St. Bonaventure University, the Institute of St. Thomas Cincinnati. Father McNulty has been a university teacher, a parish priest for two years and a Newman apostolate chaplain. Presently he is the Catholic chaplain to the students of Emory University.

Rev. Timothy Flaherty, O.S.B, was born and educated in Camden, N.J. His college and seminary years were spent at Belmont Abbey, North Carolina. He returned home to Camden, N.J. to be ordained on June 4, 1941. Since ordination, he has served as a teacher at Benedictine School in Savannah, assistant pastor at Sacred Heart Parish in Savannah and visiting chaplain to the Georgia State Prison. After spending eight years back at Belmont Abbey and Charlotte, N.C., he returned to Savannah as assistant pastor of Sacred Heart Church, where he now serves.

Reverend Edward J. Flatley (Chaplain Major) was born October 4, 1915, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He attended parochial school, West Catholic High School and St. Charles Seminary, Overbrook, in Philadelphia, and was ordained on June 7, 1941, by His Emminence Dennis Cardinal Daugherty. His assignments include: teacher, Reading Central Catholic High School, Reading, Pennsylvania, 1941-42; director, Madonna Settlement House, Philadelphia 1942-49; assistant pastor, St. Joan of Arc, Philadelphia, 1949-56; assistant pastor, Stella Maris, Philadelphia, 1956-57. He entered the Army July 19, 1956,and was stationed at Fort Lee, Virginia, to April 1958.

He was stationed in Korea, 1958-1959; Fort Dix, New Jersey, 1959-1960; Germany, 1960-1965; and Fort McPherson, Georgia, 1965-1966. He will depart from Fort McPherson in July 1966, for Vietnam.
