What I Have Seen and Heard - Archbishop Gregory's Weekly Column

Print Issue: March 17, 1966

Gerard Sherry's Departure -- Archbishop's Statement

“In congratulating Mr. Gerard Sherry upon his entrance into the world of secular journalism, we also regret his departure from the Atlanta scene. The three years that he has served the Archdiocese of Atlanta as editor of The Georgia Bulletin have been stirring and memorable. The years from 1963 to 1965 have been those of the Vatican Council. Mr. Sherry during these years has been a chief spokesman of the laity in this great renewal.”

“Our people have kept pace with the liturgical and ecumenical progress of our times; they are more aware of the meaning and mission of the Church. This is due in great part to the style in which The Georgia Bulletin was edited. But Mr. Sherry’s greatest contribution has been his own sense of justice to all men, and his ability to express it forcefully.”

“His newspaper work for the Catholic press in Cleveland, Baltimore and Fresno, California came to a climax here in Atlanta since January, 1963. As he brings his professional competence and his scale of values to a daily newspaper in a university city, he will have our gratitude, our best wishes and prayers.”

“Gerry, may God bless you and yours!”

Paul J. Hallinan

Archbishop of Atlanta
