Expansion Campaign Regions Announced

The parishes of the archdiocese have been grouped into six regions and priest-moderators and lay chairmen for each region were announced this week by Archbishop Hallinan as part of the Archdiocese Expansion Campaign. Three of the regions comprise the parishes of Metropolitan Atlanta. The other regions will be centered in Rome, Athens and Griffin. As parish committees are organized in succeeding weeks, men volunteer campaign workers will assemble in regional centers for organization and report meetings.

Very Rev. Harold J. Rainey, archdiocesan campaign coordinator and assistant coordinators Rev. Eusebius J. Beltran and Rev. Noel C. Burtenshaw participated in the meetings of pastors in the rectories this past week at which schedules were finalized. Pastors are expected to complete enlistment of their parish chairmen and associate chairmen this week.

Committees of women are now being organized within each parish to perform important administrative and secretarial functions. The women will complete lists of parishioners and prepare materials which the men campaigners will use in their work.

Regional groupings are:

Region: Moderator - Rev. John D. Stapleton, pastor of St. Jude’s parish, Sandy Springs. Chairman - Mr. Herbert G. Farnsworth of Christ the King parish. Parishes included are: St. Jude’s; Christ the King; St. Paul of the Cross; St. Joseph’s, Marietta and the Church of the Holy Spirit.

Region 2: Moderator - Very Rev. Dale W.J. Freeman, V.F., pastor of St. Mary’s parish, Rome. Chairman - Mr. Marshall Wellborn of St. Mary’s parish, Rome. Parishes included: St. Joseph, Dalton; St. Gerard, Fort Oglethorpe; Our Lady of the Mount, Lookout Mountain; St. Bernadette, Cedartown and St. Mary’s, Rome.

Region 3: Moderator - Very Rev. Thomas J. Roshetko, S.M., pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Atlanta. Chairman - Mr. Robert K. McLellan of Immaculate Heart of Mary parish. Parishes included are: Sacred Heart; Immaculate Heart of Mary; Church of the Holy Cross; Our Lady of the Assumption; St. Joseph, Maronite; St. John, Melkite, and St. Thomas More in Decatur.

Region 4: Moderator - Rev. John J. Mulroy, pastor of St. Joseph’s parish, Athens. Chairman - Mr. Edward J. Fechtel, Jr. of St. Joseph’s parish, Athens. The parishes of Region 4 are: St. Luke, Dahlonga; St. Michael’s, Gainesville; St. Mark, Clarksville; Mother of Our Divine Saviour, Toccoa; and St. Joseph’s, Athens.

Region 5: Moderator - Rev. R. Donald Kiernan, pastor of St. Anthony’s, Atlanta. Chairman - Mr. James W. Callison of Most Blessed Sacrament parish. The parishes grouped together in Region 5 will be: Immaculate Conception; St. John the Evangelist, Hapeville; Sts. Peter and Paul, Decatur; Our Lady of Lourdes; Most Blessed Sacrament; and St. Anthony’s.

Region 6: Moderator - Very Rev. Raymond Govern, C.S.S.R, pastor of Sacred Heart parish, Griffin. Chairman - Mr. James H. Hedderman of Sacred Heart parish, Griffin. The parishes of the region are: St. Peter, LaGrange; Sacred Heart, Milledgeville; St. Joseph, Washington; and Sacred Heart, Griffin.

In announcing the appointments, Archbishop Hallinan explained that the parishes of each region will meet in subsequent weeks at a central hall. For the convenience of men volunteers the same meeting hall and the same night will be reserved for weekly regional meetings.

Missions will be organized within their parent parish and the mission committee will participate in the same organization and report meetings as the parent parish.

Parish chairmen and men volunteer workers will be given schedules of meeting places and dates as they enlist into their parish organization.
