New St. Joseph's Hospital Head A Native Georgian

Sister Mary Melanie, R.S.M., a native of Gainesville, has been named administrator of St. Joseph’s Infirmary, Atlanta. Sister M. Melanie interrupted her original studies at St. Joseph’s to enter the Sisters of Mercy; she now returns as head of the hospital.

Sister Mary Brian has filled the office of assistant administrator.

Sister M. Melanie replaces Sister Mary Josetta, R.S.M., who completed six years as administrator and has now been transferred to Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Savannah.

Sister Mary Melanie is the daughter of Mrs. Ignatius L. Courtenay and the late Mr. Courtenay of Gainesville, Georgia. She received her early education in Gainesville and in 1939 came to Atlanta to begin her studies for nursing at Saint Joseph’s Infirmary. Sister interrupted her studies after one year to enter the Sisters of Mercy at their Motherhouse in Baltimore, Maryland.

After taking her vows and becoming a professed Sister of Mercy, Sister Melanie continued her education at Mercy Hospital School of Nursing and received her diploma in nursing from that school. She then earned a B.S. degree form Mount Saint Agnes College and a M.S. degree from the University of Maryland.

Sister Mary Kristen, R.S.M., has taken over the duties of director of nursing. Sister M. Kristen replaces Sister Mary Incarnata, R.S.M., who is now stationed at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Savannah. Sister M. Gloria, R.S.M, and Sister Mary Camillus, R.S.M., have also been assigned to Saint Joseph’s Infirmary.
