Father Roshetko Marks Silver Jubilee As Priest

The Reverend Thomas J. Roshetko, S.M., pastor of Sacred Heart Church, Atlanta, Georgia, celebrated the twenty-fifth anniversary of his ordination on Sunday, May 5, 1693, in Sacred Heart Church.

The officers of the Mass were: celebrant: Reverend Thomas j. Roshetko, S.M., deacon; Reverend John McDonough from Rome, Georgia, sub-deacon; Reverend James Gilbride, S.M., master of ceremonies; Reverend James T. Murray, S.M.

Present in the sanctuary at the Mass were: Rt. Reverend Monsignor Joseph G. Cassidy, rector of Cathedral of Christ the King, Atlanta, Most Reverend Joseph W. Buckley, S.M., superior general of the Society of Mary; Very Reverend Charles J. Willis, S.M., provincial of the Washington Province of the Society of Mary; Very Reverend Vincent P. Brennan, S.M.N., superior of the Marist Fathers in Atlanta and president of Marist College, Atlanta; Very Reverend M.J. McMahon, S.M., superior of Marist Provincial House, Washington, D.C.; Very Reverend John McQuade, S.M., superior and rector of Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans, Louisiana.

Father McQuade preached the sermon at the Mass.

Present, also, was a large delegation of Marist Fathers and priests of the Archdiocese of Atlanta.

Father Roshetko’s relatives attending the celebration were: Mr. and Mrs. H.J. Hill, of Baltimore, Maryland; Miss Genevieve Rosheko, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Roshetko, and Mr. Pat Roshetko, from Cleveland, Ohio; Mr. Charles Rush, of San Francisco, California; Mr. and Mrs. James Kelly, of Washington, D.C.

A public reception was held from 3 to 5 o’clock in the afternoon at the Dinkler Plaza Hotel. Approximately 500 parishioners and friends attended. At 4 o’clock, a program was presented with Father Murray, S.M., acting as master of ceremonies. Music was provided at the Mass and at the reception by Sacred Heart choir under the direction of Mr. Robert Krick. Mr. Robert Little was the accompanist at the reception.

In addition to the musical selections by the Sacred Heart choir, the program at the reception consisted of a short talk by Mr. Robert B. Troutman, Sr., on behalf of the men of Sacred Heart parish; a talk by Mrs. George Gardner, speaking on behalf of the women of Sacred Heart parish; and Master Patrick Martin who delivered a poem on behalf of the children of the parish.

Following these, The Very Reverend Charles J. Willis, S.M. spoke on behalf of the Marist Fathers. The very Reverend Vincent P. Brennan, S.M., was called upon to present the superior general of the Society of Mary, the Most Reverend Joseph W. Buckley, S.M., who congratulated the jubilarian. Father Buckley praised the work of the Marist Fathers in Atlanta in their educational endeavors and in their parochial work.

At the conclusion of the program, Father Roshetko expressed his deep appreciation to all who had helped make the celebration such a joyful occasion.

Born in Cleveland, Ohio, Father Roshetko was professed in the Marist Order in 1933 and was ordained to the priesthood June 16, 1938. He served at Brunswick, Georgia from 1938-9 and New Orleans from 1939-42. He served as an Army chaplain from 1942-46.

From 1946 to 1947 he attended both Notre Dame University and Catholic University of America, where he obtained his M.A. in philosophy. He was vice-rector of the Marist seminary of Immaculata in Layfatte until 1949 when he became vocations director, after parish work and some three years as professor at Notre Dame Seminary, New Orleans.
